Nerve Conduction Velocity Testing

What is nerve conduction velocity testing?

At Advanced Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, with specialized nerve testing equipment and highly trained doctors, we are able to conduct in-house nerve conduction velocity tests. A nerve conduction velocity test (NCV) is a specialized electrical test that is used to determine the strength and adequacy of the conduction of nerve impulses down a nerve in ones body. This test is used to determine if there are any signs of nerve damage or inadequacies of nerve impulse conduction.
Using a gentle electrical stimulus, your nerve is electronically tested with electrodes on your skin’s surface. Two electrode patches are placed on different locations on your body to help us test the electrical activity in your nerves, allowing us to calculate the speed of impulse transmission. If there is a slower speed found on the test, this test indicates there likely is some type of abnormal or unwanted pressure on the nerve being tested.

Why do I need nerve conduction velocity testing?

Nerve conduction velocity tests are used to test if there is any nerve damage and also to determine if it’s nerve damage or muscle damage. There are a variety of symptoms or conditions that can be checked with NCV which include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Sciatic nerve problems
  • Herniated Disc Disease
  • Chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy and neuropathy
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Continuous pain

There are a variety of other conditions and symptoms that warrant nerve conduction velocity tests, so it’s very important to speak with your therapist about all your symptoms to help us further diagnose the issue.
