What is a subluxation?

Have you stepped foot into the chiropractor’s office and heard them say the word subluxation, but didn’t know what it was? Don’t worry, many people aren’t familiar with the term. So if you’ve asked yourself, “what is a subluxation?” we’re here to help! Simply put, a subluxation is a term used in chiropractic medicine to describe when one of the vertebrae in your spine moves out of its normal position. It’s a latin-derived word meaning slightly or somewhat (sub) and dislocate (luxate).

When this occurs, the out of place vertebrae puts pressure on the nerves in your spine and surrounding muscles, causing pain. Subluxations seem pretty small, but since your spine is the central support system for your body, it can cause all sorts of issues when left uncorrected. In more extreme cases, prolonged issues can cause different stages of subluxation degeneration and nerve damage.

So, how can you avoid subluxations? Subluxations occur in a variety of ways. In our office, we see them from car accidents, after a woman gives birth and during pregnancy, slip and falls, athletic injuries or even sleeping the wrong way! Subluxations can also occur from poor posture (yes, we’re talking to you who have been working from home) and lifting heavy objects incorrectly.

Rest assured, chiropractic adjustments can help the pain and misalignment caused by subluxations. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help correct the spine’s positioning and restore your vertebrae to their proper position. For subluxations, chiropractic adjustments are a safe, non-invasive procedure to help realign your spine in a painless way.
